What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick, web-like ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. It acts as a shock absorber along with supporting the arch of your foot during walking or any other weight bearing activity.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopaedic complaints seen at Contemporary Healthcare in Dee Why. The plantar fascia ligaments experience a lot of wear and tear in everyday daily life. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed. This inflammation then leads to pain and swelling in the heel or underneath the foot. Some studies suggest that the plantar fascia not only becomes inflamed but also degenerates in this condition.

Common causes of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Playing sport
  • Regular weight bearing activity such as walking
  • Poor biomechanics of the foot
  • Poor foot function in general e.g. if the muscles of the foot are not doing their job properly, the plantar fascia has to work harder. This can lead to inflammation and tissue damage
  • Being overweight
  • If your foot arch is high or if you have flat feet
  • Tight structures at the back of the leg such as the achilles tendon, calf or hamstring muscles
  • Spinal problems can contribute to the problem also

Some of the common symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis include…

  • The major symptom is pain either at the bottom of the heel or underneath the mid-foot
  • It usually affects just one foot, but it can affect both feet
  • Pain usually develops gradually. This pain can be dull or sharp in nature
  • Some people feel a burning or ache on the bottom of the foot extending outward from the heel
  • Pain is usually worse in the morning when a person takes their first steps out of bed, or if the person has been sitting or lying down for a while
  • Climbing stairs can be difficult due to stiffness in the heel
  • After prolonged activity, the pain can flare up due to increased irritation or inflammation. People don’t usually feel pain during the activity, but rather just after stopping

Once my injury has improved, what can I do to prevent further injury from happening…

Once the symptoms of the plantar fasciitis are under control, Dr Orazio will then start to address underlying causative factors. Some of these include:

  • Poor flexibility or tissue damage in the back part of the leg
  • Tissue damage/scar tissue in the spine, particularly in the pelvic area
  • Poor functional movement patterns. This will lead to repetitive abnormal loading
  • Poor neuromuscular control of the leg
  • Poor balance
  • Dietary issues can also be addressed if the person is interested in making positive changes in this area. A poor diet is considered inflammatory and may be a contributing factor in long term improvement of the condition.

Dr Orazio’s success rate with plantar fasciitis is almost 100% over a period spanning 30 years at the Dee Why practice
