Do you or someone you know suffer from some form of chronic musculoskeletal pain? In my 30 years of clinical experience the common answer to this is a resounding YES. We all know someone who suffers from chronic issues only to be told by their doctor “that nothing can be done” or “you will have to learn to live with the pain”.

Dr Orazio Trevisan is the owner and founder of Contemporary Healthcare and he uses a whole body holistic approach in the diagnosis and treatment of  chronic  pain at the Brookvale practice. He has people come to see him from all over Sydney as well as regional centres for treatment of their chronic pain.

“In my experience, most people with chronic pain can be helped. The key is to address not only a persons symptoms, but to assess and treat the underlying causes.”

Let me give you some examples of chronic pain that I see in the Brookvale practice:

  • A person presents to the clinic with chronic lower back pain, they have seen a number of practitioners who have given them little or no help. Generally the lower back has been the main area of focus in treatment. It needs to be said that the lower back pain may simply be a symptom of an underlying problem somewhere else.

In the diagram below we can see the muscular connections between the lower/ upper parts of the spine and the shoulders. The chronic lower back pain that the person is experiencing may be due to a shoulder problem on the same or opposite side of the body. The shoulder problem can lead to an increased work load in the lower back ultimately leading to chronic pain. In this case then, the shoulder needs to be treated along with the lower back in order to get rid of the lower back pain.

  • In this next example, a person presents to the clinic with a chronic knee problem. This person has again seen many different practitioners with little or no help. The focus of treatment has been the knee. Again in this case the knee pain may be only a symptom of  problem somewhere else such as the foot or the hip. If we look at the diagram below, we can see the intimate relationship between the hip, knee and foot. There can be chronic tightness in the foot or hip, biomechanical dysfunction in how the foot or the hip moves or simply a lack of stability in the foot or hip due to injury or overuse. The foot or hip dysfunction can then lead to the knee having to work a lot harder which can than result in chronic pain. In this case the foot or hip would need to be treated along with the knee to resolve the chronic knee problem.

These are just 2 common examples that I have seen repeatedly over the last 30 years. There are countless more examples but the take home message is see a practitioner that looks at whole body function and has a holistic approach to treatment.

At Contemporary Healthcare Brookvale, the latest forms of treatment are offered to achieve the most outstanding results for patients. The 3 most effective treatments of choice for chronic pain which set Dr Orazio apart from other clinicians and other practices are;

These treatments are used in combination to;

      • Break down scar tissue
      • Improve functional movement
      • Improve neuromuscular co-ordination of the affected area

Dr Orazio Trevisan has over 30 years of clinical experience and specialises in dealing with complex issues which lead to chronic pain. If you have any questions regarding treatment for chronic pain or if you want to make an appointment, please call the Brookvale practice on 9971 4408.

Welcome to some of the benefits of proper breathing

Improving your breathing at Contemporary Healthcare Brookvale Northern Beaches. At Contemporary Healthcare, Dr Orazio Trevisan has been improving peoples breathing for almost 30 years. Dr Orazio is the owner and founder of Contemporary Healthcare and he uses a whole body holistic approach to improve the quality of breathing in his patients.

As a society we have forgotten the art of breathing. In my 30 years of clinical experience the majority of people that I have seen in my practice breathe incorrectly. Incorrect breathing can lead to a plethora of health issues. Some of these include;

  • High blood pressure
  • Poor circulation
  • A decrease in lung volume
  • Increased levels of stress
  • Increased levels of anxiety
  • Decreased performance in sport
  • Inflammation in the neck and spine
  • Scoliosis
  • Allergic reactions
  • Snoring
  • Bad breath
  • Sleep apnea
  • Gum inflammation and tooth decay
  • Crooked teeth
  • Jaw pain and malocclusion
  • Worsening the symptoms of asthma
  • Chronic back pain
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Stiffness in the spine
  • Chronic sinus issus

When assessing and improving peoples breathing, Dr Orazio looks at the person from a holistic perspective using a 5 pillar approach . The end goal is to achieve amazing results for every single person who comes to the practice.

At Contemporary Healthcare Brookvale, our unique form of care encompasses our 5 pillar approach to health. These 5 pillars are:

Move better

  • Dr Orazio Trevisan will assess your posture, spine, upper and lower limbs, balance and movement patterns. We also assess the state of your breathing muscles, the primary muscles such as the diaphragm and the secondary muscles. Your body cannot function normally without proper movement. We often find that pain or movement issues related to the musculoskeletal system can have a huge negative impact on our ability to breathe properly. It is important therefore that the areas of dysfunction get treated. If they are not treated they will continue to interrupt the way you breathe. If there is a problem with the musculoskeletal system that requires treatment, at Contemporary Healthcare we offer all of the latest ‘state of the art’ treatment modalities to get you better quickly. Dr Orazio Trevisan has studied all of these techniques extensively both overseas and in Australia. These treatments have been used by him for over 20 years with absolutely amazing results.The 3 most effective treatments of choice for musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction which set Dr Orazio apart from other clinicians and other practices are;
  1. ESWT (Shockwave Therapy)
  2. IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation)
  3. ART (Active Release Technique)

These treatments are used in combination to;

  • Break down scar tissue
  • Improve pain and functional movement in the spine
  • Improve pain and functional movement in the rib cage
  • Improve pain and functional movement in accessory joints involved with breathing

Less pain and better function equals better breathing and improved oxygen levels to all the major organs including the brain

Think better

  • Our mental health plays a huge part in how our body functions. Chronic stress affects both our posture and how our nervous system functions. Stress will often lead to long term activation of our ‘fight or flight’ response, along with a decrease in function in our ability to rest, digest, repair and reproduce. People who have chronic stress are generally mouth breathers and have postural issues. Huge benefits are gained by improving these as well as helping a person manage their stress levels.

Eat better

  • Have you ever thought about how your diet affects how you feel and how you breathe. An anti-inflammatory diet can be crucial in improving both of these areas. An inflammatory diet that has a lot of processed foods may be part of the problem. Poor food choices may be impacting the level of inflammation in your body. Dr Orazio Trevisan will look at your diet and address the need for any changes. Dietary supplements may also help if your body is lacking in certain nutrients.

Sleep better

  • Two thirds of adults in the developed nations fail to get the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. We don’t often think about how our sleep affects our ability to recover from injury and disease. Dr Orazio Trevisan will look at your sleep patterns and may suggest ways to improve your sleep. It is also important to understand how a poor sleep pattern may be impacting your health and recovery. In this pillar we address all of the issues relating to poor sleep etiquette. Some of these may include time spent in front of screens (phones, computers), lighting, room temperature, when you exercise and when you eat.

Breathe better

  • Breathing forms an integral part of our bodily functions and keeps us alive. When we breathe properly it provides many positive effects with regards to our health. Poor breathing can lead to sleep apnea, snoring and the need to go the toilet throughout the night along with many other health issues.

In addressing these 5 different areas, Dr Orazio Trevisan has helped many of his patients achieve better breathing at the Brookvale practice.

“In Australia, it’s estimated that 45 per cent of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime.  In any one year, around 1 million Australian adults have depression, and over 2 million have anxiety.” (Beyond Blue)

Anxiety and depression can be 2 of the common symptoms that people experience when their body is in a state of chronic stress.

When we are suffering from chronic stress bought about by the burdens of a busy modern lifestyle, many people turn to medications in order to address the symptoms of stress without addressing some of the underlying causes.

The underlying causes of stress can be chemical, emotional or physical stress.

Chemical stressors include toxins, moulds, bacteria, viruses, inflammatory foods, poor nutrition and electromagnetic fields from our surrounding environment.

Emotional stressors include stress from finances, family and work.

Physical stress can occur due to repetitive injury, trauma or poor posture.

Chronic stress has a huge detrimental impact on various parts of our body, including the brain, autonomic nervous system, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, gut, gall bladder, musculoskeletal system and hormonal system.

Some of the symptoms of chronic stress can include; light and noise sensitivity, anxiety, depression or feelings of sadness, headaches, tiredness, insomnia, clenching or grinding your teeth, craving sugar or salt, digestive issues, food sensitivities or allergies, high blood pressure, trouble losing weight, hair loss, difficulty getting pregnant, chronic muscle tightness and unexplained joint pain/ stiffness.

Integrative Chiropractors are quite often overlooked as a source of help to manage the drivers of stress.

Strategies used by Chiropractors to help manage chronic stress include;

  • Techniques to help control light and noise input to the brain
  • Removing inflammatory foods from the diet such as gluten, dairy, sugar, corn, nightshade vegetables
  • The use of  supplements to help the body heal including; herbs for adrenal support, zinc, magnesium, vitamins A, D E and K, probiotics, herbs to heal the gut and anti-inflammatory herbs
  • Advice on posture and exercise
  • General lifestyle advice
  • Spinal adjustments to optimise neurological function, improve posture, improve joint mobility
  • Advice on proper breathing technique
  • NET (Neuroemotional Technique)

We often see wonderful results in the clients that we see with chronic stress. We are able to markedly improve symptoms, help to address the underlying causes as well as to give the client tools to help deal with their stress on a daily basis.

With summer fast approaching, many of us are turning our attention back to getting fit and losing the winter flab so we look toned and feel great. This involves a lot of regular exercise such as swimming, gym work, pilates and yoga.

A large number of us start our new exercise program with either an acute (short term) or chronic (long term) injury, one of the most common being an injury to the shoulder.

Sound familiar? I see a huge number of people in my clinic who have exactly that, shoulder pain that has been affecting them for a long time. Some people do seek help and treatment, but a large number of people procrastinate and don’t get a proper diagnosis and treatment only to end up under the surgeon’s knife in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Most shoulder problems involve some form of damage to the rotator cuff muscles leading to chronic instability and pain in the shoulder. This can often have an adverse effect on other areas of the body such as the neck, mid back, lower back, elbow and wrist.

The majority of shoulder problems can be treated and managed very effectively through Chiropractic care.

Short term management usually involves treating the specific part of the shoulder which is damaged and causing pain. Some of the more common areas involved in treatment are the rotator cuff muscles (such as the infraspinatus, supraspinatus and subscapularis muscles) as well as the shoulder capsular ligaments (most commonly at the front of the shoulder).

Long term management involves addressing the underlying issues that caused the shoulder to become damaged and dysfunctional. These can include;

  • Spinal problems in the neck, mid-back or lower back (including pain and stiffness),
  • Jaw dysfunction
  • Chronic stress (this can lead to shoulder damage either through postural changes or changes in nervous system function)
  • Poor diet, leading to inflammation in the gut and joints
  • Muscle imbalances between the front and back parts of the body (upper, lower crossed syndromes)
  • Poor posture,
  • Poor core strength
  • Poor flexibility

How many of you reading this article have one or more of the problems listed above? Having the shoulder properly assessed and being given a proper diagnosis and management plan is paramount as early as possible. Managing the injury properly along with the underlying issues that lead to the shoulder injury will lead to a much better outcome, saving you from a lot of long term pain, not only physically but in the hip pocket.

Could what you eat influence your mood? Put simply, yes. A new study conducted at Deakin University and published this year suggests that eating more whole foods and less junk food may reduce severity of depression.

The ‘SMILES’ trial was a 12-week randomised controlled trial which used personalised dietary advice and nutritional counselling support from a nutrition specialist centred around the ‘ModiMedDiet’ (Modified Mediterranean Diet), a diet based on a combination of the Australian dietary guidelines and the dietary guidelines for adults in Greece. The primary focus was increasing dietary quality by supporting the consumption of the following 12 key food groups:

Whole grains (5-8 servings per day)

Vegetables (6 servings per day)

Fruit (3 servings per day)

Legumes (3-4 servings per week)

Low fat and unsweetened dairy foods (2-3 servings per day)

Raw and unsalted nuts (1 serving per day)

Fish (at least 2 servings per week)

Lean red meat (2-4 servings per week)

Chicken (2-3 servings per week) and eggs (up to 6 a week)

Olive oil (3 tablespoons per day)

 The following foods were recommended to be reduced (not completely eliminated!):

Sweets

Refined cereals

Fried food

Fast food

Processed meats and sugary drinks (no more than 3 per week)

Red or white wine, beer and spirits: No more than 2 standard drinks per day.

Participants in the trial experienced an improvement in their mood highlighting that improving one’s diet according to current dietary recommendations may be a useful and accessible strategy for addressing depression.
